Speaker: Dr. Weixing Chen
Dr. Weixing Chen is currently a professor in the Department of Chemical and Materials Engineering at the University of Alberta. His research on stress corrosion cracking of pipeline steels has been supported by various organizations including major Canadian pipeline operators, PRCI, US Department of Transportation and Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada.
Topic: “Implications of Pressure Fluctuations for Pipeline Integrity”
This presentation will examine various types of pressure fluctuations observed during oil and gas pipeline operation. Attention will be paid to how different types of pressure fluctuations affect the service life of pipeline steels experiencing stress corrosion cracking and corrosion fatigue. An introduction to Pipe-Online Software that has been developed recently for crack growth and remaining service life prediction of pipelines operating under the most severe type of pressure fluctuations will be made. Strategies of pressure control aimed at mitigating the damage caused by variable pressure fluctuations will be discussed. New ideas on the development of pipeline steels with better resistance to stress cracking will also be introduced.
