YEIP Recognizes: International Day of the World’s Indigenous People
August 9
Aug. 9 commemorates International Day of the World’s Indigenous People. This date was adopted in December 1994 by UN General Assembly and marks the date of the first meeting of the UN working group on Indigenous populations sub-commission on the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights held in Geneva in 1982.
Indigenous Peoples live in all regions of the world (across 90 countries) and represent 370 to 500 million people.
Indigenous Peoples speak the majority of estimated 7,000 languages and represent 5,000 different cultures.
